Happily, it came to my attention that a new blog about Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia more generally, Nomadistan, came online last week.
The Nomads (as I’m christening them) include locals and foreigners, who are united by their aim of providing
insightful, sometimes humorous, sometimes serious commentary on the past, present, and future of this fascinating country […]

Gazprom targets Kyrgyzgaz?

Certainly the notion of the Russian Gazprom seeking to gain a stake in Kyrgyzgaz is likely to be seen as a further sign of Russia’s supposedly agressive energy politics, as suggested by the title of Eurasianet’s article - “Russia Striking Back in Engergy Game, Makes Play for Kyrgyz National Gas Company” - on the subject.
Yet, […]

Following on from Sweco’s tongue-in-cheek conclusion that it’s time for Santa Claus to up sticks from Lapland and move to Kyrgyzstan, the Kyrgyz Tourist Board is capitalising on this arguably apolitical claim to fame: They’ve launched a competition, which runs until December 20, to find Santa Claus in the republic’s mountains.
As Akbar Dzhigitov of […]

Attack of the Clones

Way back in 2005, one of the “black PR” tricks that were launched on anti-Akaev groups such as Kel-Kel was having their websites cloned to discredit the organisations.
Seems like someone’s trying a similar trick on Edil Baisalov, as Mirsulzhan reports (RUS).  In addition to Edil’s real LiveJournal blog,  baisalov, there is now a very […]

Shock, horror! Swedish logistics company Sweco has suggested that Santa Claus should leave his traditional home in Lapland and relocate to Kyrgyzstan.
The company drew this conclusion on the basis that:
By starting his journey there [from Kyrgyzstan], Santa can achieve the most efficient around-the-world trip to distribute Christmas gifts. He can eliminate time-consuming detours and […]

Campaigning for the forthcoming parliamentary elections is due to begin on November 26, and as 24.kg reports, as of November 22 only 22 of the 50 parties had registered their candidates. Among the candidates who are now registered is now-former State Secretary Adakhan Madumarov, running for Ak Jol, who resigned on November 20 […]

“Shut up and put up!”, or Kyrgyz-style tolerance

As regular readers may have noted, posts concerned with matters such as HIV/AIDs, bride kidnapping, polygamy and sexual minorities have often provoked strong views both in support of the authors’ opinions and against them.
For the vast majority of the time I’m of the opinion that debate - even when opposing views cannot be reconciled […]

Just a quick heads up that Sean Robert’s blog The Roberts Report, has posted an interview with well-known activist Edil Baisalov (who is, incidentally, also a blogger).
The interview covers several themes, including Edil’s thoughts on the “Tulip Revolution”, the forthcoming parliamentary elections in which Edil is running as a candidate on the Social Democratic […]

Whilst political events in Kyrgyzstan have understandably being getting a fair amount of coverage recently, there is still life away from politics, especially where entertainment is concerned. Trawling around the 24.kg site the other day, I came upon this intriguing headline: “Kyrgyzstan to host horseball games”.
Now I don’t know about you, but I’d never heard […]

Our partner, Transitions Online, has published an article by Genderstan blogger Anna Kirey on the situation of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) people in Kyrgyzstan entitled “Dangerous Attraction”.
Whilst there are glimmers of hope that the situation for LGBT people is gradually improving in the country, not least thanks to the activities of activists […]
