OSCE will monitor elections

A while ago, right after the 21 October Constitutional Referendum held in Kyrgyzstan, I wrote a post on the criticism of the international community about the way it was held. US and German Embassy in Bishkek raised their concern over the legitimacy of the Referendum and urged the country to improve the process of Parliamentary elections.

OSCE has also raised its concerns about the results of the Referendum condemning the Central Election Committee for the reports of irregularities, including credible reports of ballot-box stuffing and inflated voter participation figures. OSCE believes that referendum did not meet the international standards to which the Kyrgyz Republic has committed itself.

This is why OSCE has been seriously preparing to monitor the upcoming parliamentary elections in order to ensure that it is held without any violation of standards and norms. Central Asian News Service (CANS) informs that the head of observers mission of the OSCE Bureau of democratic institutions and human rights Nicolai Vulchanov met with the Secretary of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs Taalaibek Kadyrov. During the meeting the head of the mission informed that they getting ready with the preparation for the upcoming elections and are going to send about 24 long-term and 250 short-term observers to the elections.

Now, this obviously creates a possibility that the upcoming elections will be free and fair. We can judge the real impact of observers mission after the election.
