Impressions of the second day
Unlike yesterday, today the situation was not so tense. I am glad to the fact that there were not any riots or disorders during the night, as it was on March 24, 2005, though there are rumors that some disorder has occurred among the protesters because of the lack of food and sleeping mattresses.
Protesters began the day cleaning the main square, which was a good idea to start a day with as the square, where the rally is taking place is in a great mess – there are piles of thrown plastic bottles and sandwich wrappers everywhere.
According to many different sources, there were about 5-8 thousand people on the square today. This number may double to the concert of famous Russian RnB Dj Da Vlad, which will take place tonight at the main square of Bishkek. This step was taken quick, as opposition leaders had promised people to invite a Russin pop-star Yulia Savicheva, who, if agreed, was supposed to give a big open-air concert on April 12 on the main square of Bishkek. Unluckily, opposition failed in negotiations with the pop-star, because she refused saying that nobody had informed her she was going to perform for politic action. So if you want to witness a big crowd of Kyrgyzstani people “dancing to a Russian tune”, you are invited to Bishkek.
Despite the people’s expectations, ex-prime minister, a leader of opposition Kulov didn’t give any speeches on the podium. Instead, he gave a 10 minute interview standing next to the stage on the square. Kulov shared his opinions about the rally. He said that the main aim of protests was to make the president take appropriate steps in constitutional reform. However, Kulov did not say anything about how long protests would last. Moreover, the interview took place near the speakers of the stage and the audibility was really poor.
Talking about the length of protests, I think that opposition either should do its best to keep their people on the square for a long time period; it may be achieved by means of organizing various entertaining events for people, which is now being carried out by opposition leaders; or try to make things they want happen faster, because as soon as sowing season begins, people, who have come from rural areas, will have to quit protesting and go to their fields. Otherwise, they will not have harvest, which will result not only on their poorness, but on the economy of whole Kyrgyzstan, as now agriculture has become a leading economic force, and Chuy and Issykkul regions are the main suppliers of potato.
In palce of Kulov, Melis Eshimkanov, another leader of opposition, made a speech on the podium. He told about different issues –marching towards the buildings of State TV, and making its chairman leave his position, and disproving the rumor that Kulov secretly had met with Bakiev. He also told about Almaz Atambaev being an incompetent prime-minister.
Another significant story of the day was a holding of a competition for the best patriotic song, organized by opposition. The winners were awarded prize money in amount of 100,000, 70,000 and 50,000 som for 1, 2 and 3 places respectfully.
The version of the constitution prepared by opposition is already published in many mass media. Government says that it is learning opposition’s variant of constitution along with a constitution that was suggested by special committee. Bakiev keeps telling that he is open to dialogue, but opposition doesn’t want any negotiation with the government until their requirements are fulfilled.
Tomorrow is April 13, Friday. Many people associate Friday 13 with evil, sinful, immoral and criminal. Even Socrates, a Greek philosopher, stayed in his house on such days. Opposition promises to hold a really big meeting tomorrow. Some analytics believe that tomorrow opposition will work hard, as it may be their last chance to attain their goals. I hope that they will not try to attain their goals by means of violence.
