Political pleasures. Hollywood style.
Let’s take a break and stop talking about politics. It’s summer, it’s hot and everyone wants to relax. So let us instead talk about politicians.
To be more precise about the normal life pleasures of normal Kyrgyz politicians. And let this piece be qualified as a rumor. It’s summer, after all.
So the main news that I was recently honored to share a plane with a bunch of pop stars from Moskow flying to Bishkek. When I discovered Angelica Varum (a famous pop singer from Russia) sitting next to me in the airplane I though I was having an extensive hallucination. I pinched myself twice. Angelica didn’t vanish and I than I realized that, indeed, here we are, flying together to Bishkek. Trying to digest this fact I started scrolling my memory for the grand musical events that were probably scheduled for this period of time in the Kyrgyz capital and that completely left my memory…Nothing that would pop up. Summer in Bishkek is not the time for big events; even the opposition is standing idle with all picket and protests postponed till September.
After a while I was about to die of my curiosity when Russian stars managed to rescue me. Finally they started discussing the profits that they were going to commission out of their trip to Kyrgyzstan and this was another time I was about to collapse. I’m not a strong supporter of counting someone’s money. I’m not going to do it this time as well but let me just share a piece of information.
As it turned out Russian singers got invited to the country by a Kyrgyz politician. Not an ordinary one, of course. Daniar Usenov is pending to be elected as a vice minister of the current ministerial cabinet. He is a well-known proponent of economic reforms and the one who is supposed to lead the country out of the economic crises. This year his son graduated from college and the event was presumably to become one of the most important ones in the year 2006 in the Kyrgyz Republic. Alas, it was worth it. Russian singers cost a fortune but who cares when such a thing happens on the ground. The price for having all pop stars on the private celebration according to the stars themselves skyrocketed to the sum constituting the sum completely unimaginable for the Kyrgyz reality. To host the celebration a well-known Kyrgyz resort “Avrora” on the Issyk Kul lake was reserved for this particular case. One can ask : “So what?”. Indeed it’s a normal Hollywood style of having fun. But the question is whether this style is quite appropriate on the ground. With all the extremes and oddities of the process of economic development in the country we are floating to the situation when the poor in the country are desperate in their impoverishment and the rich are outrageously wealthy on the other side. Some of these well-established buddies are apparently those who are in charge of improving the life on the ground en masse. Not being able to succeed with this task they instead prefer to have fun. Hollywood style.
